End-of-Tenancy Cleaning Checklist: How to Hand Over Smoothly
Guide · Updated November 2026
When you hand back an apartment, the property management checks everything closely. Anyone who forgets the oven, window frames or blinds often has to clean again or pay for a third party to do it. This checklist helps you keep track of everything.
Kitchen
- Oven inside and out, including trays, racks and door seal
- Extractor hood: clean or replace the grille and grease filter
- Defrost and clean the fridge and freezer, leave the doors open
- Hob and sink, descale the taps
- All cupboards and drawers inside and out
- Dishwasher, including the filter
Bathroom and toilet
- Descale washbasin, shower, bath and toilet
- Remove limescale from grout, taps and shower screen
- Bathroom cabinet inside and out
- Clean drains and traps
- Dust the ventilation grilles
Windows and blinds
- Glass inside and out, streak-free
- Frames, rebates and windowsills
- Blinds, roller shutters and slats
- Balcony and patio doors
Living areas and floors
- Floors according to type: parquet with a barely damp mop, tiles wet, carpets shampooed if required
- Skirting boards, doors, door frames and handles
- Light switches, sockets and radiators
- Built-in wardrobes inside
Storage rooms and outdoor areas
- Cellar and attic compartments swept clean
- Balcony, patio and letterbox
- Garage or bike parking space, if rented
Common pitfalls
- Limescale: In many regions the water is hard. Limescale on taps and shower screens is the most common reason for having to clean again.
- Grease filters: Property managers almost always check the extractor hood.
- Blinds: They are often forgotten and take a lot of time.
- Timing: Schedule the cleaning only after the furniture has been moved out, ideally the day before the handover inspection.
